China Care hosted a full day trip to Chinatown for NU students, the kids, and parents of China Care! We got dimsum for lunch in Chinatown, went on a scavenger hunt, and got to go shopping!! Our kids and parents said this was one of their favorite events so far!!
The kids spent time making friendship bracelets for friends and family! We also had a station to make floating boats to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Festival). The kids and parents were also able to try Chinese zhongzi - glutinous rice stuffed dumplings with different fillings wrapped in bamboo leaves. Then we had relay races with our mentees and mentors!!
This event is geared towards the mentor and mentee pairings in our Mentorship Program, but everyone is welcome to come, especially those who are interesting in learning more about joining the program!! We will be playing various board games such as Jenga, Catan, Monopoly, Taboo, and more!
This event was geared towards the older participants of China Care, but everyone was welcome to join! We spent the Sunday night watching Hayao Miyazaki's "Howl's Moving Castle" with China Care members and chatting about college, eating snacks, and just relaxing and enjoying the movie!
As Chinese New Year was the day before, we spent our time together celebrating the Lunar New Year! We introduced some traditional activities that are usually done to celebrate Chinese New Year, made decorations, and more! We also enjoyed dumplings and snacks! :)
The theme of the first playgroup was legendary beasts, myths, and legends of China! We introduced various Chinese mythical creatures and some famous legends about them, and then encouraged the children to decorate blank T-shirts and masks based on these legends. Afterwards, we played games and tournaments based on the characters and the legends the kids chose. Of course, we also had snacks and fun treats!!
Our first playgroup of the 2017-2018 school year was on SATURDAY September 30th from 11AM-1PM in Fisk 311! Our theme was be Chinese characters and the Chinese words for different careers!
